This report describes the rationale, approaches, organization, and resource development leading to a large-scale deletion bin map of the hexaploid wheat genome. Accompanying reports in this issue detail results from chromosome bin-mapping of expressed sequence tags representing genes onto the seven homoeologous chromosome groups and a global analysis of the entire mapped wheat EST data set. Among the resources developed were the first extensive public wheat EST collection. Described are protocols for sequencing, sequence processing, EST nomenclature, and the assembly of (...) ESTs into contigs. These contigs plus singletons were used for selection of distinct sequence motif unigenes. Selected ESTs were rearrayed, validated by 5′ and 3′ sequencing, and amplified for probing a series of wheat aneuploid and deletion stocks. Images and data for all Southern hybridizations were deposited in databases and were used by the coordinators for each of the seven homoeologous chromosome groups to validate the mapping results. Results from this project have established the foundation for future developments in wheat genomics. (shrink)

The focus of this study was to analyze the content, distribution, and comparative genome relationships of 996 chromosome bin-mapped expressed sequence tags accounting for 2266 restriction fragments on the homoeologous group 3 chromosomes of hexaploid wheat. Of these loci, 634, 884, and 748 were mapped on chromosomes 3A, 3B, and 3D, respectively. The individual chromosome bin maps revealed bins with a high density of mapped ESTs in the distal region and bins of low density in the proximal region of the (...) chromosome arms, with the exception of 3DS and 3DL. These distributions were more localized on the higher-resolution group 3 consensus map with intermediate regions of high-mapped-EST density on both chromosome arms. Gene ontology classification of mapped ESTs was not significantly different for homoeologous group 3 chromosomes compared to the other groups. A combined analysis of the individual bin maps using 537 of the mapped ESTs revealed rearrangements between the group 3 chromosomes. Approximately 232 of the consensus mapped ESTs matched sequences on rice chromosome 1 and revealed large- and small-scale differences in gene order. Of the group 3 mapped EST unigenes ∼21 and 32% matched the Arabidopsis coding regions and proteins, respectively, but no chromosome-level gene order conservation was detected. (shrink)

A development of a constructive fragment of analysis: "constructive" in the strong sense that instead of, say, Cauchy sequences, it deals only with recursive sequences of rationals which can be recursively shown to converge. Analogues of classical subjects such as continuity and differentiability are explored in detail. A careful presentation of the foundations of probability theory, containing many valuable innovations. Two accounts of probability are adduced: probability as a measure on the subsets of a probability set, and as a measure on the sentences of a formal language. The book stresses connections between these two accounts; of particular interest is its thesis that statistical probabilities may be regarded as estimates of inductive probabilities.—R. H. T.

An explication of preference and equivalence with regard to the evaluation of states of affairs. The logical system developed consists of the ordinary propositional calculus together with connectives standing for the notions above. In the course of this study a number of useful distinctions and definitions can be found. The author indicates that his logic of preference may be of use in connection with utility and decision theory, but does not develop this point.--R. H. T.

Since the bulk of this book is devoted to paraphrasing Aristotle's physical views for modern ears, it would have been more correctly styled an exposition or synopsis. As such, the work is of some value and may prove particularly helpful as an introduction. Though many of his expository comments are quite sensitive, the author takes for granted an uncritical acceptance of nineteenth century mechanics in those passages which attempt critical assessment of peripatetic natural science.—R. Levi in this book develops the views on inductive logic which he put forward in 1967 in Gambling with Truth. He extends the account given there of inductive expansion and supplements it with an account of routine expansion and contraction with the aim of constructing a view of how revisions of bodies of knowledge should be evaluated. He is concerned to give an account of the revision of probability judgments and gives the contexts of specific enquiries an important place in (...) critical appraisal of changes in cognitive commitment. There has been much first-rate work done in recent years both by way of criticizing Humean assumptions and explicating alter native concepts of causal explanation and non-logical necessity. Roderick Chisholm early showed the inadequacies of neo-Humean views of explanation in his articles on counterfactual inference, and C. J. Ducasse, Sterling Lamprecht, William Kneale, Nicholas Maxwell, Richard Taylor, G. E. M. Anscombe, P. T. Geach, Milton Fisk, Baruch Brody, Peter Alexander, R. Harré, and William Wallace, among others, have articulated interesting alternative (...) views to the Humean ones they have so trenchantly criticized. We will be concerned with the recent work of Harré and Wallace in this study. Harré has not only launched a fresh attack but has also presented what is probably the most fully developed neorealistic [[sic]] alternative. Wallace’s work is basically historical but has an intentional systematic import also. The books of the two authors are mutually supportive. (shrink)

Advances in transplantation have extended the life and relieved the suffering of thousands of individuals. The prospect of being able to use tissues from embryos, as well as from anencephalic newborns, offers the promise of further relief of suffering. However, these possibilities raise significant moral and public policy issues. The question arises of the extent to which those who disapprove of abortion may make use of tissues derived from abortion in order to treat serious diseases. This essay argues that, with (...) proper safeguards, such tissue can be used without cooperating in abortion. That is, even those who oppose abortion can benefit from the use of tissue procured during abortion. Questions also arise regarding the probity of maintaining a pregnancy in order to produce an anencephalic newborn whose biological existence will be maintained so as better to secure organs once death is declared. It is argued that, since no harm can be done to a being that has neither a sense of self or the capacity to feel pain, and since women have a right to forego abortions, there is no legitimate ground for opposing women's seeking meaning in their pregnancy through maximizing the opportunity of others to use the organs of their anencephalic newborn once death has been declared. Finally, it is argued that, since the capacities for sentience, a minimal condition for personhood, are never realized by an anencephalic, the entity has never been alive as a person. Therefore, there should be no opposition in principle to aborting anencephalics nor, after proper declaration, to making their organs available as one would after whole-brain death, despite the continued functioning of the brain stem. Much of the legal and social interest in new neuroimaging techniques stems from the belief that they can deliver on the materialist understanding of the relationship between the brain and the mind. This article looks at predictions about the future both of scientific advances and of social reactions to those predictions. It looks at the likely technical limits on neuroscience-based mindreading, then at the likely limits in how the law might use such technologies. It describes three kinds of technical barriers (...) to detailed and useful mindreading: the likely impossibility of making a complete and accurate model of a human brain in light of its incredible complexity, the problems of interpersonal and intrapersonal plasticity, and the problem of trying to read, now, someone's past mental state. The potential changes to the operation of the law, through the use of mindreading as evidence of pain, deception, or bias, among other things, could be extremely important. (shrink)

After a condensed and lucid summary of Classical Psychoanalysis, this Indian philosopher applies the criterion of self-referential consistency to criticize Freud's application of psychoanalytic categories to the phenomenon of religion. Professor Masih argues that Freud's account of religion fails to account for other religions than Monotheism. He interprets this desire to dethrone the God of Monotheism as a consequence of Freud's repressed father-hatred and extends this technique of psychoanalyzing Freud to see in his metaphysics of materialism a subconscious love of (...) the mother. There are elements of experience that transcend any psychoanalytic account of that experience. Whereas neurosis is necessarily infantile, the infantile aspects of such adult experiences as religion is not necessarily neurotic. Freud's genius in developing the psychoanalytic method is a case in point. Masih then argues that Freud's mistaken application of this method of treating individuals to social phenomena involves regression into a neurotically determined prejudice. The final irony is that even Freud's psychoanalytic method has the religious dimension of a humanistic concern for man's salvation from illness.—T. R. H. (shrink)

The book is "Blakean" in its scope and tone of vision, but (...) suffers from heaviness of style and its misplaced messianic pretensions and prophetic wrath. This monograph offers a crisp, comprehensive summary of the discoveries to date in the field of pre-biological evolution. Supported by extensive references to recent research and quite technical in treatment, the work is comprehensible to any reader with a beginner's knowledge of organic chemistry because the author is careful to focus his discussion around three hypothetical stages of abiotic evolution. The author's argument that the histories of the universe, of the earth, of nature and of man form a continuous evolutionary (...) thread is persuasive, although admittedly an extrapolation based on his conviction in the uniformity of chemical function.
